For our first ever walk in Marine Park, Brooklyn we joined with the Salt Marsh Alliance, an organization which plays a pivotal role in the smooth operation of the Marine Park's Salt Marsh Nature Center. The SMA supports programs at the Nature Center and is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to environmental education. Thanks to Andrew Cannon who led a great walk in a coastal habitat, an unusual location for the NYMS. On the walk we encountered rusts on native and introduced plants, including one on asparagus—found by SMA's own Debra Sturm. The most prolific mushroom of the day was Candolleomyces candolleana, which was underfoot everywhere. A red Russula found in the grass near the nature center seemed unremarkable at first, but by the end of the day it had begun blackening, suggesting that it might be the provisionally named Russula sp.IN53—which Sigrid Jakob and Matthew Rozanoff's indispensable NYC mushroom guides suggest *could* be Russula nigrescentipes. About 25 people on a ~3.5 hour walk.
