It is always such a pleasure to walk the woods at Hunter Island in Pelham Bay Park. Last Saturday we had guests Tom Bigelow, Juniper Perlis, Emma Richter and Aubrey Carter, so it was extra special. New for the park and city was Pseudomerulius aureus, a merullioid crust which differs from the quite similar Serpula himantioides in having hyaline spores and a bright golden color. Simon Gurvets spotted Ovicuculispora parmeliae, a lichenicolous fungus with impressively sized didymospores. We saw Sphaerobolus sp., Mytilinidion sp., Sphaerostilbella berkeleyana. There were macrofungi as well, like Lentinellus castoreus (notable for its astringent taste) and Ossicaulis lignatilis (notable for its odd habit of growing inside of hollows in trees). ~25 people on a ~4.5 hr. walk.
